During my time at Stirling College, I had the great pleasure of helping our students form a Volleyball club. For me it was a way of engaging with Chinese students with limited English to compliment my limited Mandarin Chinese. What fun we had. The guys trained enthusiastically and we eventually managed to get to play in a few tournaments, even though they were hard to come by. This was a great surprise to me as I would have thought that regular competition in China in all sports is a given. In fact it isn’t. They have adopted and institutionalised approach to sport in a similar model to the East German one. There is a healthy attitude to undertaking physical activity but the middle level of sport is very undeveloped. Should they ever overcome this aspect of their sport system, look out world….

After winning our first ever competitive matches in 2023.
